We have to decide in function of certain assumptions concerning the physical behavior of the system, if a one- or two-dimensional description will provide sufficiently accurate information about the behavior of the flow. It is of importance to note that the basic flow equations being three-dimensional any description with less than three space variables will be obtained by disregarding the flow variations with respect to the corresponding space coordinate and this can be formulated mathematically by averaging out the equations over that space variable.
