You can add extra support to the shelves by simply gluing a 3⁄4" x 1"-wide piece of pine on edge to the underside of the shelf’s front edge. Even with this upgrade, I’d be hesitant to go past 36"-wide without adding a center support of some type. So I picked through the cheaper boards to find the best. After carefully matching the boards for best edges (for glueup) and for grain match, I glued the panels for the top, the shelves and for the two sides. The shelves and two sides are sized to finish at 11"-wide, which is two 1×6s glued together. The top was two 1×8s that were then ripped to finish width. PUTTING IT TOGETHER Construction was pretty straightforward. After cutting the finished panels to length I used pocket screws to attach the three shelves between the two sides.

Sizing for half-lap joints come from the piece themselves. The width of the notch is the thickness of the material. The depth of the notch is half the width. Cut a little shy at first, test the fit — not too tight, and not too loose — and make any adjustments necessary. I’d already marked the arches on the lower stretchers while marking my half-lap notches, but if you haven’t done that yet, mark the two 3∕4"-radius curves, 3∕4" in 3 Cut the base pieces to length and then lay them out in position.
